Home birth supplies

Planning a home birth? Please gather the following at least one month before your baby is due:

Home Birth Bag – Supplied by The Midwives Clinic

  • Disposable blue under pads
  • Sterile gauze
  • 1 Peribottle
  • Bendable straws

Supplies – Not Supplied by the Clinic

  • Plastic mattress cover or drop sheet (as mentioned here)
  • 1 dozen cotton flannel receiving blankets
  • 4 old soft towels
  • 2 Large garbage bags
  • Bowl for placenta
  • Board – cutting board or large cookie tray
  • Thermometer – digital
  • Nighttime Kotex Maxi pads or Attends or Poise extra-large
  • Hot water bottle
  • Clothing for the baby + 2 cotton hats
  • Food for labour and after birth
  • Gatorade or other rehydrating drink, herbal tea, mineral water and juice (all can be frozen into ice cubes). Crackers, granola bars, cheese, nuts and seeds, sandwiches, soups, fresh or dried fruit, honey.


You may need:

  • Grounded (3 prong) extension cord or power bar
  • Electric heater (winter) or fan (summer)


Other supplies you may find helpful to have:

  • Extra pillows (can be covered with plastic bag & then closed with safety pins)
  • For compresses: large cooking pot; 10 washcloths or a towel cut into 5” x 5” squares
  • Mirror, camera, MP3/iPod
  • Notebook to keep labour notes
  • Gravol (or LIFE Brand dimenihydranate) 50 mg tablets
  • Ibuprofen 200 mg – for pain relief after the baby is born.
  • Epson salts or herbal sitz bath
  • Arnica 200 c. – a homeopathic remedy for bruising and swelling
  • Bach Flower Rescue Remedy – pastilles or liquid – for emotional balance
