The
Midwives’ Clinic of East York-Don Mills is a partnership of midwives
attending both home and hospital birth in the Toronto area. We are all
registered with the College of Midwives of Ontario and, as such, we adhere to all standards and requirements set by this governing body.
Our admitting privileges are with the Toronto East General Hospital.
For each of our clients we offer a complete course of care including
regular prenatal care, labour and birth – either in hospital or home
setting, and six weeks of postpartum follow up for both the mother and
the newborn.
If during this course of care either the
mother of the baby present with clinical issues which are outside of
our scope of practice, we will refer to the appropriate specialist. For
any non-pregnancy related medical issues, women are expected to seek
care with an appropriate practitioner.
A team of two midwives will share responsibility for your care. Our plan
is that one of your two midwives will be available to you whenever you
need care. We make sure that you have visits with each of your midwives.
We want you to know both of your midwives well. The midwives on your team
will both keep up to date with your needs and concerns. Whichever one
is on call when you go into labour will be the primary midwife at your
birth.
About an hour before you give birth, your midwife will call a second
midwife to assist. The second midwife assists the primary midwife
during the last part of labour. Once the baby is born the second
midwife is there to help care for the baby while the primary midwife
continues to look after you.
Our practice regularly has students from the university based midwifery
education program and students who have already qualified to practice
in other countries but need Ontario experience. Most midwifery clients
say that they really benefit from student involvement in their care. Students
are always under the supervision of one of the midwives in the practice.
They participate in clinic appointments, home visits, and births. |
